Though this shake, which is meant to replace a meal, has many promising qualities for overall health and weight loss, there are a few areas where it potentially falls short. Read on to learn more…

Orgain Shake Nutrition Facts

High Calories

Starting with calories, the Orgain Meal Powder Shake has a whopping 220 calories per shake serving – which consists of 2 flat scoops. In our opinion, this amount of calories is too high for a meal replacement shake if your goal is to try and lose weight. *

A great calorie goal amount per shake serving should be around 100 calories – which is far off from the amount in each Orgain shake. Other shakes that we review on our site, including our top-rated shake this year contains less calories per serving.

The reason to keep your calorie count down is that you want to have leeway to add other healthy ingredients into your shakes, like almond or cashew milk, fruits and veggies, nuts and nut butters and more. Many people like to create smoothies by blending their shake powder with other healthy ingredients each day.
Or, if your goal is to lose a large amount of weight, you may want to just mix your shake powder with water, and still have a shake that satisfies you using the least amount of calories possible.

Protein – Brown Rice, Pea and Chia Seed

Each Orgain Meal Powder Shake contains 20g of protein per shake serving, which is a great amount to keep you full and satisfied as well as boost your metabolism to burn fat. Many shakes do not contain enough protein per serving, and that can be a big problem for weight loss.*

Orgain Meal Powder Shake contains plant-based proteins instead of whey, soy or another type of protein. Plant-based proteins are on the rise due to their positive health effects and promising results in assisting with weight loss. The Orgain Meal Powder protein blend includes organic brown rice, chia seed and pea protein.

While pea protein helps to keep you full and satisfied, brown rice protein can aid in fat burning, since it has a “thermic” effect which means it creates heat in the body. (1) Studies show that both of these ingredients can help with your weight loss efforts. (2) (3)

The third ingredient in the blend, chia seeds, is high in protein and fiber, two ingredients that aid in weight loss and can help to reduce appetite and increase fullness. However, studies have not found positive correlations between chia seeds and weight loss. (4)

Fiber – A Good Amount Per Svg

Each Orgain Meal Powder Shake contains 8g of fiber per serving, which is a great amount for overall health and weight loss. Fiber in a meal replacement shake is essential in order to keep you full and satisfied and also to keep your digestive processes moving smoothly – removing toxins and waste from your body.

Vitamins/Minerals/Superfood Blends?

Orgain does contain some vitamins and minerals in each shake serving, but not very many. Each shake serving contains 9 vitamins and minerals including calcium, thiamin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, iron, riboflavin and vitamin B6.

Ideally, a shake should contain a more robust variety of vitamins and minerals, as only 9 per serving is a bit light, especially since some of the amounts are low. For instance there is only an 8% daily value of calcium per serving.

However, one of the things that is nice about this shake is that it has a variety of different whole foods and superfoods in each shake serving, which is unique among meal replacement shakes. Since you are replacing your meals with these shakes, this can help you continue to have a well-balanced diet.*

Some of the superfood blend ingredients include organic amaranth, quinoa, sunflower seed, a greens blend, wheat grass, kale, beets, tomato and more.

Carbohydrates –  A High Amount Per Svg

Even though Orgain includes some nice superfoods in their shake, there are a lot of grains, which could be the reason that there are 24g of carbohydrates in each shake serving.

24g of carbs per serving is a LOT for a meal replacement shake if you are trying to lose weight. A good rule of thumb for weight loss would be between 6-10g of carbs per shake serving, so 24g is much, much higher.

Especially for people who are trying to watch the amount of carbs they take in each day, this may not be a good shake option for you.

Sugar/Sweeteners: Low Sugar but Sugar Alcohol Included

Each Orgain Meal Powder Shake contains 1g of sugar per serving, which is a good amount for weight loss. Ideally, a shake should have as close to no sugar per serving as possible.

The issue, however, is that each shake serving contains 5g of sugar alcohol, which may cause unpleasant side effects. Sugar alcohols are found in many sugar free and diet products, but they are poorly digested by the body. On the Orgain shake label, erythritol is a sugar alcohol.

Sugar alcohols can help to regular blood sugar levels, so can be helpful to manage diabetes. However, since they are not completely absorbed in the digestive system, they may cause unpleasant side effects in some people including bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, cramps and dehydration. (5)

In addition, sugar alcohols could cause your blood sugar levels to fluctuate if consumed in large quantities, and having balanced, regular blood sugar levels is important for weight loss.

Orgain Cost

On the company website, the price for a 16 serving container of Orgain shake is very high at $49.99 (or $3.12 per serving). The shake is sold in other places for cheaper (like for instance on Amazon for $32.24 per container), but that is still $2.02 per serving and there are other high quality meal replacement shakes reviewed on our site that are cheaper.

Orgain Shake Conclusion

All in all, the Orgain Meal Powder Shake has some promising qualities as a meal replacement, including that it has a good amount of protein and fiber for weight loss, along with a nice variety of organic superfoods in each shake serving.

However, in terms of it helping with weight loss, it has a high amount of calories at 220 calories per shake serving, and a high amount of carbs at 24g per shake serving. Although it contains pea protein and brown rice protein, two proteins with proven results to help with weight loss, it also contains chia seed protein. Though chia offers many rewarding health benefits, studies done on this ingredient did not reveal a positive correlation with weight loss.

Finally, although the Orgain Meal Powder Shake has a low amount of sugar, it does contain a sugar alcohol which may cause unpleasant side effects in some people. And the price of this shake is quite high, espeically when there are other high quality shakes that are much cheaper.

If you think this might be the shake for you, make sure to compare it to other reviews on our site before moving forward, so you can find your perfect match.
